European in need of help with US history!!!?

I,m from europe but i study us historywith an american teacher who is part of an exchange programme ( these questions are quotations of the teacher)...please help:
1. Why is W W 1 not a point of much interest for americans?
2.Pls, give me a brief story about stock markets and great depression
3. Women's movement...what did women do to achieve their goals?
4. What are "settlement houses"?

These are very interesting questions. I am a German teacher in the States, but one of my interests is history. I'll answer the three that are most interesting to me personally (from this American's perspective at least).
1. It isn't so much that it's not a point of much interest; I think it WOULD be if kids were taught more about it. The history books tend to "gloss over" WWI, briefly discussing it before turning to WWII. Also, since WWII was considered much more "horrific," (as if you can judge that) history teachers tend to focus MORE on that. Thus, unless you actually are into reading (and most Americans sadly are not anymore) you really don't learn much, unless your teacher makes you read "Im Westen Nichts Neues--"and that, in and of itself, only gives you a surface understanding of all the horrible things that occurred during the first World War.
2) In the 1920's, there was a huge economic boom in the US. The "War to End All Wars" was over, and people were in an extremely heady time. Unfortunately, there was a lot of economic speculation as well. These economic speculators made very unwise decisions and the Stock market fell in late October 1929. Many people lost EVERYTHING in this crash and the US plunged into the Great Depression. We only really got out of it when FDR decided to use his New Deal programs and to prepare for war with Germany (something he really saw as a foregone conclusion, due to his ties with Great Britain). One thing that is interesting to notice about anyone who lived during the Great Depression: they tend to be "pack rats." If you go into their cupboards, they are completely filled (as is my grandmother's) and they are loathe to throw anything away.
3) Your teacher needs to be more specific about the Women's Movement? Is he/she referring to Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Seneca Falls (1848)? Yes, they made a published statement about the rights of women, but they really didn't accomplish much? Is this person talking about the suffragism movement? Most states did NOT allow women the right to vote, but this changed when Wyoming allowed it at the turn of the century. Still, it took a special Amendment to the Constitution to make this a reality at the federal level. Or are we discussing Betty Friedan's landmarkbook from the late 50's, the Feminine Mystique, which argued that women were only given ONE option (housewives) and that this violated their rights? OR are we discussing the fact that this book then turned out to open up the floodgates for many women in the late 60's/early 70's and created an aggressive women's movement with NOW (National Organization for Women) at the forefront of the struggle for an Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)--an amendment which incidentally has NEVER been ratified.
