Which of these stock cars has the best handling?
1. 2003 Mini Cooper (stock, non-turbo)
2. 1994 Mazda Miata (1st generation, stock)
3. 1999 Mazda Miata (2nd generation, stock)
Which of these three cars has the best handling through curves, turns, slalom speeds, etc?
Which of these cars would be the easiest to modify for better handling?
Mini coopers have a tighter turning radius but again, they are FWD. They have a slightly higher center of balance as well (not good for handling).
To put it simply, first generation miatas have great handling and have many options for suspension systems. You can acquire a full set of track ready adjustable shocks for about $400.
WIth the second generation miatas, the engine was beefed up a tiny bit (about 10hp) but the handing is not quite as good as the first generation.
In my long winded way, first generation miatas have the best handing and all miatas are easily modified (not to mention MUCH cheaper than a mini-coop).
