installing laminate countertop?
I want to install a new post-formed laminate countertop -- you know the countertops that come in varying stock sized at home depot. The problem is I need a 14 ft. straight run and the longest they come in is 10 ft. Okay, I know at the pre-mitered corners they have drawbolts in pre-drilled holes to get a tight fit between the two pieces, but there are no pre-drilled holes and drawbolts on the non-mitered edge. Can I still put 2 straight pieces together? Is it possible to add the drawbolts myself by drilling the holes into the bottom of the countertop? Any other suggestions?
Yes, there are several kinds of connectors that will draw panels together. Lumber yards, home centers, hardware stores may have them, but you may have to buy them online if stores around you don't. Depending on the style, you will probably have to buy a Forsner bit - this cuts a fairly large diameter hole without having a long point to break through the laminate http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-forstner-bit.htm
The first answer (c-clamps) usually only works if you glue or screw strips to the under side of the counter for the clamps to pull on.
Since you can't get a full length piece, take steps to choose lengths to reduce the risk that water from the sink will constantly be on the joint.
