Do regulated public utilities work in the best interest of the majority?
In my state and many others, providers of electricity are heavily regulated. They are allowed to make a profit based on their costs and may only raise rates upon approval. They charge fixed residential rates and commercial rates and stock of these companies are a good and stable investment.
Since so many people are against a government run health care option, would regulation of private health care insurers bring the reform the US needs?
Treating health insurance companies like public utilities would be a good way to reform the problem. Unfortunately that's not on the table, and the big private insurance companies and the senators they buy would never let that happen, so a Public Option is the next best fallback plan. Public Utilities are private companies who do work that is critical to the common good, and are therefore usually highly regulated - that stability is what makes them such good stock investments. When you deregulate energy companies you get what happened with Enron, which is out of control corporations let greed guide them into making as much money as possible, to the detriment of the public. California was treated to rolling blackouts and left millions of dollars in debt by Enron's deregualted profit-driven manipulations. And that's what's happening now in the profit-driven health insurance market. The huge profits of health corporations is an essential conflict of interest with the health of the nation - the richest nation in the world, yet the only developed nation without universal health care for all its citizens. Regulating health insurance in some fashion is essential, both economically and morally.
