In reference to 401K plans, what is meant by Large CAP STOCK, Mid, Global/ International Stock, Balanced and S
Need some info about 401K and IRAs . . . thanks!
Looking at your picture, you look young, so go with the more risky stocks that have more potential for greater gains. Those would be the International Stocks. Balanced is more conservative, less risk, but less gain. Large cap basically just means the company is large, with more STOCK SHARES to sell. Mid is of course, a smaller company, and it really doesn't matter about that, except for the thought that a larger company might be less risky to invest in.
Also, since you are young, you might consider managing your own IRA. I think a 401K has to be run by the company you work for though. And if you can put some of your paycheck in it, then put as much as you absolutely can!!! Hopefully your company will match your contribution, so it's like free money. You won't lose your part of the contribution either, if you decide to leave the company.
You happen to be asking this question on a day when the stock market dropped a whole lot and it might get worse. But generally, from the way the world is going, it will make sense to have your money in stocks of companies that do things like mining, and other energy or commodity related things. Oil, natural gas, titanium, uranium, copper, gold, etc.... If you have a choice of a portfolio like that, it's the one I'd pick for sure. But most of these plans have a mix in them regardless of the amount of risk is in each.
So, what you really only have to decide is how much risk you are willing to take. Generally it is best for younger people to get into the riskier stocks, because if they lose money in one year or maybe for several years, you'll still have plenty of years to make it up. Older people get into the safer plans because they might be having to cash out their plans soon, and can't afford the risk of the plans being down for a year or so. The upside of riskier plans is that they usually don't go down anyway, but actually have much greater gains than the safe ones. I'm 53 and I would still go with the riskier stocks.
By the way, I TRADE STOCKS as a living, but just with my own money. Been doing it for 5 years now. It's fun and a great learning experience.
And just to let you know, there have been substantial shifts in the markets over the past few years. To make money in the market now requires one to look to the world more for profits than ever before. So the global markets are something that can't be overlooked as just "risky" stocks anymore. They are almost necessary to be making a good return.
