ive worked for publix for 6 years i wanna retire next year i have about 600 shares of stock and...?
...am wondering about taxes
how much can i expect to be taxed on that?
It all depends on how you are holding the stock in your portfolio.
If you bought the shares from the company, then they are taxed this way.
You need to make sure you have good records of the purchase price on each share of stock. This is because the tax is figured on the difference between the purchase price and the selling price. For example if you bought a share of stock three years ago for $20 and sold it tomorrow for $30, you would have a gain of $10. Next, it depends on how long you have owned the share of stock and your tax bracket. If the share of stock is over a year old, the tax is calculated at a long term capital gain rate. Under current law, if you married and your taxable income is less than $67,900, then the long term capital gain rate is $0. If your taxable income is over $67,900, then long term capital gain rate is 15%. If the share of stock is less than a year old, it is taxed at the short term capital gain rate which is the same as the ordinary income tax rates. So if you are in the 25% tax bracket, the tax on the share gain is 25%. If you have good records, you are allowed to identify which shares you want to sell first. This way you can be sure not to sell any shares that are less than a year old. If you lost money on the shares, there is no gain and thus no tax. You can tax deduct the loss on your income tax up to $3,000 per year. In the example above, if you bought the share of stock for $20 a share and sold it for $10, you could deduct $10. If the shares are part of your retirement plan, then the rules change completely.
Some companies allow you to purchase shares of company stock inside a 401k plan. When you do this, you are buying stock with a pretax dollar. This means in the example above, if you bought the share for $20 and sold it for $30, you would owe ordinary income tax on the $30. Tax in this case in on the entire amount, not just the gain. And, if you take the money before 59 1/2 you will also owe a 10% penalty.
If you bought the share of stock for $20 and sold it at $10, you have to pay ordinary income tax on the $10. And, you can not deduct the loss from your income tax. And, if you sold the share before 59 1/2 you again would have to pay the 10% penalty for early withdrawal.
Your best bet would be to sit down with a tax advisor when it comes to selling the shares. This way you can be sure you are selling the right ones and avoiding as much tax as possible. Since you mentioned you just bought the shares from the company, then they are taxed as in 1,2, and 3 above.
