Capitol Gains? I have a stock that is down about 14,000 but has distributed a couple thousand in cap. gains?
My fund shows unrealized gain/loss of $13,000 for YTD 2008. Long term cap. gains are about $1,400 and short term cap. gains of about $74, dividends about $100. Come tax time, do I pay taxes on the gains even though the fund is down thousands? I am not sure if it matters but I do not itemize, I take the standard deduction.

You answered your own question with the key word, "unrealized". If your dividend was not directly reinvested, then you realized the gains, and will therefore be responsible for the dividend taxes on your realized gains over the exemption allowed. It won't be much.
