ZERO STOCKING
If I buy one Share of Stock for one dollar and the price of the STOCK DROPS to zero, where did my dollar go?
In other words, who has my dollar?
That is the same as "If I buy a candy bar for one dollar, where did my dollar go?"
The answer is "it went to the person you purchased the candy bar from". The person holding your dollar is the same person who previously held a share of stock you bought.
The dollar is "lost" the moment you acquired the stock/candy. It is "recovered" when you find a buyer for the stock/candy. How much do you recover? Whatever a buyer is willing to part with to acquire your stock.
When you were the buyer, you were willing to part with your dollar to obtain the stock. Now, as the seller, you are hoping someone else is willing to part with their dollar (or more) to acquire the stock from you. If you can't find a willing buyer, you will recover nothing.
